San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee tours Clinic by the Bay
As a follow up to his congratulatory remarks at our 2nd Birthday Celebration in November, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee took a personal tour of Clinic by the Bay on February 5.
Together with Starr Terrell, his Health Policy Advisor, Mayor Lee saw the clinic in full action, meeting both volunteers and patients. He was especially impressed with our clinic’s electronic medical records (EMR) system, which has been an integral part of our operations since we opened.
He reiterated his appreciation to Clinic by the Bay for being 100% privately funded and a truly community-based solution to the health care crisis that strives to keep our working uninsured neighbors out of the emergency rooms.
The Mayor, a big supporter of volunteerism, thanked all of our providers for their service to the community and for their commitment to providing free, high quality, comprehensive medical care to those who need it the most.
Greg Roberts: “I feel part of the clinic family.”
Greg Roberts was born in Columbus, OH and grew up in Charlotte, NC. He came to San Francisco 13 years ago to get married, and because his career as a computer programmer and analyst brought him here. Both he and his wife built their careers in technology.
When asked how he first learned about our clinic, Greg said, “I found Clinic by the Bay through Coming of Age's website [a partner of Clinic by the Bay] when I needed something to do after the economy booted me from my position with the Federal Aviation Administration.” Like many others affected by the recession, he had difficulty finding a new job.
Upon completing our volunteer orientation training in June 2011, Greg signed up to assist with our IT needs. He began at the front desk, to help manage patient flow and scheduling, at least once per week and often for more than one shift. As he helped onboard new volunteers on how to use Practice Fusion, our electronic medical records system, Greg soon became one of our home-grown Practice Fusion experts. “This led me to pursue a consulting business for users of Practice Fusion as a Certified Consultant,” he explains. “I currently help about 20 health providers.”
Greg continues to volunteer at our clinic even as he grows his new small business. He spends at least 2-3 hours per week performing patient chart reviews, making sure that the documentation is complete. “The cool thing is that my volunteer work can be done remotely,” he says. Whenever possible, he still volunteers at our front desk because he enjoys the direct interaction with patients. “What I enjoy most is when we qualify a prospective patient for our services and set up their first appointment. Lots of people come to our clinic after they have exhausted all other options for healthcare. Seeing their relief, joy and appreciation is beyond words.”
Greg says that he appreciates all of his fellow clinic volunteers, especially the volunteer medical providers. “Many of the providers are not retired, so they are giving their time on top of their normal jobs. I appreciate their passion and it’s rubbed off on me!”
“I am blessed to have been led to Clinic by the Bay,” he adds. “I feel part of the clinic family.”
Thank you to all of our supporters!
